Ariocarpus retusus ssp agavoide It is a cactus with a dark green  to brown color, half buried underground, 3-8 cm. in diameter. Tubers projecting from the stem, ranging from 2-5 cm. long and 0.5-1 cm. wide. The areolas are near the tips of the tuber, occasionally with small spines. Red flowers 4cm. in diameter. The fruit is round, reddish purple, brown at maturity, 1 cm. long. Its natural habitat is the hot deserts of Tula, Tamaulipas and San Luis Potosi in Mexico.
